An article in Ladies Home Journal, "Why Gum Makes You More Alert." says studies have shown chewing gum increases blood flow to the brain. After 20 minutes of chewing, alertness goes up by almost 19 percent! It also lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol by about 16 percent.
