Figuring Things Out
I don't have a strong design "eye" or sense of how things should look. I'm more involved in the details -- do these lines have the same spacing and width, does the text wrap around the photo OK, etc. But I can replicate a design as a template and fill it with new content pretty easily. And if someone ELSE says "hey, what if we did this?" I can usually figure out a way to make it so.
Case in point: puzzle pieces.
What if we made the cover for this document a puzzle with different pictures in each piece?
Uh...
It took me a couple days (really just a few hours over a couple days), but I figured out how to do it. There's a puzzlify script for Illustrator. I did that for one picture, making it into 12 individual "pieces." Then I released the clipping paths and pulled the pieces over to InDesign, where they became image boxes. I then replaced each copy of the original image with 12 different images and resized as normal to fit each piece.
It was a lot of trial and error at first -- trying to use the pen tool over a drawing of a puzzle to make the image boxes in the puzzle piece shapes, etc. I'm such an amateur and the pen tool was really hard for me/I never got it to work quite right.
But I was really happy with the solution I found, and I gave two options: a solved puzzle and a puzzle with the pieces kind of "exploded" and spread out.
Of course the puzzle idea got killed immediately and it will never see the light of day. BUT I learned a new trick, and maybe I'll make a puzzle with Jane pictures just for fun.
Also today I figured out something to correct a screw up I made in terms of a URL and how it was created in WordPress. I was freaking out for about 45 minutes though until my Google searching got me what I needed -- a simple uncheck of a box in the settings and a reload of the PDF and I was back in business.
It's the little victories that keep me going... But who knows for how long.

Addictive Personality
I like Twitter. I am not constantly reading it - but from time to time I'll peruse. Twitterfall can be addictive though and fun to watch when you've got a second.
However, when I have a thought, see something cool or whatever - I'll fire off a tweet. But I don't use it so much to converse (I don't know a lot of people who use the service, although the whole point is to meet new people and I don't have qualms about writing/communicating to other twitter-peeps, but I just don't take the time I guess).
Sat in on my first beneficial free webinar (have been to some good paid ones, but the free ones are usually just commercials for the sponsors or otherwise too basic). It was some good stuff. Not sure how I'll be able to implement in my work or if I'll find the time to even bring it up, but there you go. (I also sat in on a not-so-beneficial free webinar today - mostly it was background noise while I continued to work.)
But the webinar is why I have been thinking about twitter I guess.
Two crochet projects:
This is 1/2 of the two blankets I'm making for my grad school friend's twins. This one took forever because of the yarn I chose. And the second blanket will be equally laborious - but too cute, right? The second one will be mostly yellow with small green stripes. We'll see if I can get the second one done before the babies arrive!
This is the bottom of my first attempt at an ABC blanket for my childhood friend's first baby - and I'm going to rip it out and start again because of the wonky corners - I started dropping stitches from the edges - on both sides (even though the left is a little better) - because I'm out of practice in single crochet. Blimey! But this didn't take too long and I want it to be right. Adding the purple on the boxes around the letters is darling, but it makes a TON of ends to weave in ... but I think I'm still going to do it in my second try. I've made this blanket once before, and it took me three first tries to get it right. Hopefully two is a charm for this version. And it's going to be SUPER darling when I'm done.
[I used Picnic on Flickr to edit that second photo ... first time, and it was really great/easy - although of course all I needed to do was crop, but what a great option to not have to crop offline and then re-load/replace a picture once you see it online and see something (like your feet) in the picture]
On my sidebar here I've got shared items from my Google reader. But I am toying with the idea of re-using that content into blog entries ... since I usually make a [snarky] comment about whatever item I'm sharing.
How about these:

My Farmhands
I took this picture Christmas 2006 when we were home. This is at the Red Hill. I did a gradient map overlay then wiped out the color of the tractor - pretty nuts. Shawn and Owen are sitting on the tractor. So cute. And I did the overlay of a digital scrapping freebie - the frames. So cool. I did a drop shadow before I merged the layers. It could use some more work, but I think this is pretty good.

Keep finding oldies and goodies to test out my digital scrapbooking knowledge on - I am killing myself, sitting at the computer much longer than work requires me to, but I LOVE this stuff. How can I ever go back to paper and scissors and glue and everything looking like a Kindergartener did it???~M.

I went to Michaels in Queens this weekend - to pick up some supplies. I've got all my bells done for the wedding (Gran is starching them for me!) - and I needed something else to crochet - before I start on my next effort, the chromium star blanket. Anyway, while there I picked up this magazine: Digital Scrapbooking Magazine
It has inspired me... So I'm probably going to have a whole new "craft" to obsess over!

Captain Cranky
Using a tutorial, I made this comic-book effect. I kinda like it. I'm practicing because I might do something like this for say the wedding rehearsal - or the bridal shower or something in my final "wedding book" that I'm planning to create using Blurb.com... Although I'm sure I'll make MANY books with that site. What fun!~M.
